Go Green! Begins an Exciting 2014 MCTA Tournament Season

TeamImage1 photo (1)With the MCTA spring tennis season at our doorstep and thoughts of warm, sunny days around the corner, twenty 2.5 and 3.0 level players gathered at Quince Orchard Swim and Tennis Club on April 5th for an evening of competitive and fun tennis.  The Go Green! Tournament, the first of  seven planned this season, used the World Team Tennis format, which invites substitutions and more team participation during play.  Participants formed four teams that played rounds of gender doubles, singles, and mixed doubles throughout the evening.

While players on the courts added points to team scores, those watching from the sidelines ate healthy snacks and socialized.  This first MCTA tournament proved to forge friendships and connected captains and players for MCTA spring leagues beginning this week.

“I love this tournament!  The players always bring high energy and enthusiasm.  It’s one of the best every year!” said Carol Kromminga, MCTA tournament chair.

No tournament would be complete without awarding the winning team.  And for this tournament both the first place and second place teams received medals.  Also recognized with sportsmanship trophies were the man and woman who displayed outstanding and positive attitudes and team encouragement throughout the tournament.

Tournament Champion team included: Shirley Hsieh, Santhana Webb, Mike James and Vincent Lau.

Second place team included: Kathryn Martin, Nancy Trimble, Larry Dubester, Maj Hamawy and Scott Lansing

Recipients of the sportsmanship award were Kathryn Martin and Vincent Lau.

Topic: Moving Forward as You Poach in Doubles

Have you watched the Bryan Brothers moves as they poach their way to championships?  A new wave of tennis and a key to good poaching in doubles is to move forward and diagonal instead of parallel to the net. When right at the net, all angles are possible and odds are everything you return will be a winner.

To learn more about this approach and how you can apply this to your doubles game, watch the full video clip, “Moving Forward During Poaching” on YouTube.
