A 2014 New Year’s Greeting from MCTA President Alan Klein

Alan MCTA Jim-2A 2014 New Year’s Greeting from MCTA President Alan Klein

Let me take this opportunity to introduce myself and to express my appreciation for the confidence shown in me by my fellow tennis enthusiasts as I embark on my first year as MCTA President.  For those of you who I haven’t met, I look forward to crossing paths on or off the courts and hearing your ideas about how MCTA can better serve the tennis community.

Tennis is one of the only sports (along with swimming and perhaps golf) that one can play from pre-school to old age, and at every point in between.  It’s a sport that we all love and care about, as it provides exercise, a competitive outlet, and social interaction.

So why are participation levels static and America’s place on the world tour at its lowest, from a depth perspective, in several generations? Serena Williams and the Bryan brothers still dominate the sport but there is a true void after that. Certainly without a Sampras, Agassi, McEnroe, Connors, Courier, Chang, or Roddick, it is more difficult for tennis to hold a grasp over the casual sports fan. This factor, combined with overwhelming recreational choices for our children and ourselves, and advances in technology, which reduce interaction in general, all weigh heavily on the sport’s current state.

It will take an effort from all stakeholders in the community to reverse this trend; from league players to league captains, to parents, to volunteers, to coaches/instructors, to small business owners focused on the tennis market, to tennis equipment, and apparel manufacturers, to tennis facility owners/operators, to government.  There are a lot of smart people out there with great ideas who need to step forward.

The mission of MCTA is to grow tennis in Montgomery County.  My primary job is to work with our Board and harness all those great ideas and contributions from the individuals and organizations mentioned above so we can achieve our mission.  Thanks in advance for your support.  Let’s make this happen!

Our winter leagues begin next Monday, January 6.  If you have not signed up to play in one of the adult leagues for gender or mixed, please check our website: www.mctatennis.org/leagues.
