Over 130 tennis players from the Washington, DC, area came out over the hot and humid Labor Day weekend, August 29 through September 1, to compete in the Bruce Francis Memorial Tournament at Olney Manor Recreation Park.

This USTA-sanctioned tournament is one of MCTA’s biggest.  It’s also part of the Maryland District NTRP Championship Series and offers NTRP-based events, including singles, gender doubles, and mixed doubles for 2.5 to 5.0 level players. This tournament honors the memory of Bruce Francis, an avid team captain, player and volunteer. The event featured friendly yet competitive single elimination matches while friends, family, and spectators watched and cheered. The unexpected blast of heat and humidity throughout the weekend gave players an additional challenge but everyone was in good spirits and played their best tennis. The four days of fun and socializing was a great prelude to the fall tennis season.

“It has been another successful year! I want to thank everyone for coming out to this tournament. It truly is one of my favorite tournaments. I love seeing everyone come together and have fun!” said Linda Gowen, Tournament Director.

After rounds of matches in the sun, both winners and finalists of each of the 16 events were awarded trophies and medals.

“Congratulations to our outstanding players for great sportsmanship and high-level competition!! Special thanks to the tournament staff – Linda and the desk attendants, Charles and the officiating team –for doing an amazing job running this event. I hope to see everyone again in 2015!” said Carol Kromminga, MCTA Tournament Chair.

MCTA Hires Hayley Hughes as its New Executive Director

DSCN1136Dreams for KidsLongtime Executive Director Dave Pullen to Retire from Post Effective June 30

The Montgomery County Tennis Association (MCTA), one of the Mid-Atlantic’s largest and most successful community tennis associations, announces the hiring of Hayley Hughes as its new Executive Director. Hughes, a Pittsburgh, PA native and an avid tennis player since age eight, brings 14 years of tennis teaching, administration, and organizational experience to her new role.

Hughes replaces Dave Pullen, the only Executive Director in the history of MCTA and the staff leader who has led MCTA to heights recognized at the local, state, sectional, and national levels.

MCTA Chairman and President Alan Klein commented, “We are extremely enthusiastic about hiring Hayley Hughes as the organization’s next leader to help grow tennis both overall and within demographics that require extra attention. We would not be in the terrific position we are in today without the outstanding vision, leadership, and intelligence of Dave Pullen. He is an outstanding tennis and business mind, who has graciously offered to continue his affiliation with the organization even after his retirement.”

Pullen added, “My time at the MCTA helm has been very gratifying. We have made a very positive impact in the community, while growing the sport that we all love. I look forward to continuing to work with MCTA in the future.”

Hughes is pleased to be part of an established team that shares the same passion to expand tennis in the county.  She said, “I am doing what I love and I want to share the benefits that tennis has brought me with others. I’m looking forward to bringing tennis programming ideas and events to area parks, schools, clubs, and coaches.  I plan to keep the organization moving forward, furthering the exemplary reputation that MCTA has with other organizations across and outside the county. “

Hughes earned a tennis scholarship at the University of Pittsburgh where during her four-year tenure she was tennis team captain, voted MVP senior year and became one of a select few eligible to join the University’s Century Club.

After college Hughes moved to Hilton Head, SC where she taught tennis for three years before accepting employment at USTA Mid-Atlantic in administrative, leagues, and tournament capacities as well as serving as the DC District Service Representative.  In her most recent position, she was a contractor at Columbia Country Club.
